Fighting for a world where every human has an equal seat at the table.

You belong here

Hi, my name is Kathryn Hubert. I'm excited to connect with you! I am a restaurant owner, chef, speaker and coach specializing in Disability Employment.  I am dedicated to breaking down barriers internally and externally in order to foster belonging and acceptance - of both ourselves and others.

The work is not easy - but you are not alone.

I am a Southern CA native, transplanted to Boone, NC, who's favorite life is in France, but who has put down roots in Greensboro. :)

I have loved food ever since I was old enough to eat it & my journey with cooking took off in high school and college. I love the way coming around a table unites people & I believe in the power of community and conversation that occurs when our bellies are satisfied and happy. Starting a restaurant called Chez Genèse (translation - the place of new beginnings) has proven to be a wonderful (albeit very hard) way to bridge gaps and bring people into a heartbeat and cultural movement.

What is that movement you may ask? My restaurant holds an integrated hiring model, which means 50% of my team is disabled and 50% of my team is non-disabled. Together, we are working to change the way our world thinks & feels about disability, both inside and outside of the workplace.

As a person who also longs to find belonging for herself, I have become dedicated to understanding and cultivating belonging for others. While that translates regularly into conversation around bias, language, and practical steps towards inclusivity, it is rooted in my willingness to be curious about and embracing humanity.

I am not here to give you a checklist or manual. I am here to prompt reflection, understanding, compassion, and dedication: dedication to see both inside and outside ourselves and to change the way our world does something because we have taken the time to change the way we see something.

So, pull up a seat and welcome to the table.

There's room for more.

What is disability integration coaching?

It's not just about letting people in. It's also about not missing out. Belonging can be available to each of us.

People with disabilities are the largest minority group in America and yet the vast majority of disabled humans are not being hired. My team and I are working to change this and inviting you to join us. My mission is to open doors for disabled individuals to find belonging in the workplace while also opening the minds of businesses that that need to tackle the misconceptions and bias that most of us carry around disability.

That being said, I am constantly learning and growing. Truly - it is an adventure over here! Join the movement to create workplaces and communities where everyone is welcomed in, valued, and empowered to make meaningful contributions. This shift will forever change our ability to prosper as unified, productive people working together in new and exciting ways. I'll guide you through addressing hesitations, opening up conversations with your team, and creating a more inclusive workplace. Together we will write a different story for disability employment, business, and our collective future.

Who is it for?

As a Disability Integration Coach, I support businesses and organizations seeking to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion through disability employment. Together, we will implement the belief my team practices daily at work: belonging is a fundamental right and humans function better together and when seen as whole individuals.

We support that belief by recognizing the following values:

1. Employees that are recognized as whole humans — not only for their skills but for their humanity — feel more respected, authentic, satisfied, and empowered.

2. There is strength in unity; we function better together in life and at work.

3. This work takes bravery, but facing that tension is how we grow and find meaning. I am here, without judgment, to validate your hesitations, support you, and partner with you.

4. Embracing disability employment will place you at the forefront of a vital movement that will shape a more inclusive and empowered future for us all.

What makes me credible?

  • I grew up with Autism in my extended family and can't remember a time when disability wasn't part of my life.

  • I started working in restaurants when I was 18 years old. I'm 36 years old now. You do the math... :)

  • I have degrees in Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, and Business.

  • I spent a year in France studying French culture and food, which has played a huge role in my concept.

  • I have worked with the Autism Society of NC & with Guilford County Schools in a classroom for students with Autism.

  • I founded Chez Genèse, an award-winning French café in Greensboro, NC in 2018. Chez Genèse provides community and inclusion by employing humans both with and without disabilities.

  • In 2020, I started and served as the President of a non-profit called Compass Greensboro. Compass was founded to provide life, social, and vocational skills to adults with disabilities through coaching, connecting, and training. After running the program for two years, I realized that the biggest barriers in disability employment lie with employers, not employees with disabilities, and disability integration coaching was born out of that realization.

  • At this point, I have 7 years of experience working for myself & over 6 years of experience running a business, including keeping a new restaurant alive during a pandemic (insert frantic face here).

My business is a culmination of my life, education, and work experience. I have a restaurant because working in restaurants got into my blood at an early age and it has become my industry. I am advocating for a world where disabled humans can get a job any where they would like. The restaurant world just so happens to be my work, so that's where I'm fighting for change on a daily basis.

Testimonials:

"Kathryn facilitated a virtual meeting for our North America population in which she asked each of us to get curious, be vulnerable and explore our own biases in a safe and constructive way. Kathryn created space for active engagement, questions, and conversation which took a topic that could trigger emotions of shame or fear and transformed it into an arena for exploration, learning, and awareness building. Our population left the conversation energized and informed. Thank you, Kathryn!"
